Bicycle Accidents
In Alberta, bicycle accidents often occur because cyclists are not always respected by the drivers of motor vehicles. As cycling becomes more popular for both commuting and recreation, the risk of serious injury has increased. Each year, dozens of Canadians lose their lives in cycling collisions, and thousands more suffer significant injuries—most involving motor vehicles. Many of these accidents happen during peak traffic hours, particularly between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., when visibility and road congestion are factors.
What to do After a Bicycle Accident
It is extremely important to gather evidence of a bicycle accident and your injuries. Taking the right steps as soon as possible can help protect your health and strengthen any legal claim. If you have been involved in a bicycle accident, you should:
- Quickly remove yourself from the roadway to protect yourself from further, serious injuries by other vehicles;
- Call 911 immediately to report the bicycle accident to the police or attend at the nearest police station to file a collision report;
- Exchange insurance and contact information with the driver of the other vehicle, and if possible, take photos of their driver’s license, registration, and insurance documents;
- Identify any witnesses at the accident scene and obtain their names and contact information;
- Take photographs of the accident scene, including your bicycle and all other vehicles involved, the license plates of all vehicles involved, the street view with road signs if possible, the road conditions, and any nearby signage;
- Notify your insurer of the accident as soon as possible; and
- Contact our office for a free consultation to ensure your rights are protected and you receive appropriate compensation for your injuries.
